I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Bryan Finocchio, Founder & Director of Catwalk for a Cure and wanted to know more about his organization and the event that’s coming up on Thursday, October 13th at 7pm at the State Room here in Boston (get your tickets here.) I’ve got my pink frock ready to go, along with my +1, the ever so fun and stylish, Marta Kagan. We’re ready for a fun night of up-and-coming designers, cancer survivors-turned-runway models and pink cocktails, of course. Thanks to Bryan for sharing the history of this fabulous event and for his passion and dedication to eradicating breast cancer.

Tell me about Catwalk for a Cure. How did it get started? What was at the core of how it all began?

In nursing school, many professors told us that “Nursing is your #1 priority, everything else comes second.” I guess I am defiant? Having a background in the performing arts, I have always wanted to do something different that incorporates my medical background and my arts background. I have had many women in my life diagnosed with breast cancer (grandmother, cousin, family, friends etc.) and one women in particular, my Women’s Health professor. She was a “tough broad”, or that’s what she called herself. She was very different from all the other professors. She understood everyone has their own separate lives and that you are able to do anything. Also, to be a women’s health lecturer, you need to have a sense of humor, and she did.

In April of 2010 she told the class, after waiting 2 hours that she was diagnosed with progressive Stage 3 breast cancer. I can honestly say there wasn’t a dry eye in the place. I remember sitting there speechless. I also remember thinking I am going to do something to give back. I am going to do a pink dress fashion show in Boston (something that hasn’t been done). I guess you could say she was the core inspiration for this whole idea.

I love the combination of fashion for a good cause. Tell me about some of the designers who will be featured on the runway?

Zack Lo - Bumble Zoo Cerise

This year we have eight designers participating in the show. Their assignment was to create a mini collection having one all-pink look and the rest pink accents. This approach is different than the all-pink fashion show last year. I wanted to give the designers more creative freedom to express who they are as an artist. We first start off with the cocktail hour. We will have eccentric shoe designer, Zack Lo, and environmentally-friendly designer, Janice Louise Miller dressing models to walk around cocktail hour and give the guests something new and fresh to look at. On the runway we’ll see six designers Nicole Herzog, Julie Montesion, Candice Wu, Julie Kontos, Drea Couture and Wesley Nault. The audience will be seeing fashion school graduates from School of Fashion Design on Newbury St, Lasell College, self-taught designers, ones who have studied abroad, and of course, Wesley Nault, our featured designer from Season 5 of Project Runway!

Susan G. Komen has done an amazing job raising money for cancer education and research. How did you come to partner with this organization for this event?

Before I started Catwalk for a Cure, I knew I needed a charity to give back to. My mother worked in Radiology for some time and used to do the walks for breast cancer and had mentioned Susan G. Komen. I wanted a charity in Boston where the money went to education and research, because that is where the knowledge and prevention happens. The root for it is education. If women/men are not taught self exams, signs and symptoms, new treatments etc., we will be in much worse shape with statistics off the chart. After researching, I met with The Massachusetts Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for a Cure in a Starbucks right in the Financial District and explained what I wanted to do. Right away I had great feedback, it was something new and fresh, and they were thrilled to help with this project.

What can people who attend this fashionable soiree expect on Thursday, October 13th? Tell us about the venue, the program and the fashion!

I think telling people that it is at the State Room is good enough. The view from the 33rdfloor of 60 State St. is absolutely incredible. Not to mention the modern architecture of the venue. Most people remember the place at the old “Bay Tower room”….I guess being 23, I have no idea what that meant. The event will start at 7pm with a cocktail hour and silent auction. Here guests will walk around, bid on items, enjoy a signature cocktail, fresh beer from Harpoon Brewery, hors ‘doeuvres from State Room, watch models walk and admire the looks, take a photo infront of our SOUL by Ludacris “step and repeat”, be interview by TTN-HD productions, and have their photos taken by “paparazzi”. The fashion show will start at 9:15pm. Here guests will enjoy our designers, music by Andrew Mason (DJ Dropl3t) and their collections as well as models, cancer survivors, and business professionals walking for the cause. After the show, guests will be escorted to the mezzanine of the Great Room for more cocktails, desserts from Five Bite Cupcakes, Pinkberry, and Chobani, as well as meet the designers and models who have made the night possible.

Where can people go to buy tickets?

Please visit catwalkforacure.eventbrite.com. Tickets are $100 and include signature cocktail, passed hors d’oeuvres, silent auction, fashion show, gift bag, and post reception and proceeds go directly to Susan G. Komen for breast cancer education and research.

What do you love best about the event?

Everything! I love the stress and excitement of planning it, the final product, but mostly the smiles on all the guests faces as well as the survivors. After all it is for them. When they smile, I smile. The survivors are who inspired me. I remember last year, a guest coming up to me, with tears in her eye, and explained to me how much she enjoyed the show…she was currently going through treatment.

Also, a few thank you’s to my team and the people making all of this possible. The event is hosted by Practically Broadway, Inc., a non-profit visual and performing arts organization. Also, I could not have done this without my team: Neira Pekmez: Event Coordinator, Christina Ruggeri: Model and Designer Coordinator, Iliana Galvez: Asst. Event Coordinator, Nick Mandella: Lead Photographer and Press Liaison.

And the big question…what will you be wearing?

That is a good question! I spend so much time planning, its usually the week of the event type deal. This year I have been looking at Express, Cole Haan, Nordstrom, and Brooks Brothers. I will most likely go with a black or gray jacket and pants, pink shirt and a pink tie, still keeping it fashionable and different. I guess you will have to wait and see! Be sure to follow us on Twitter for all the latest news on the show!

~~~
Well, Bryan, thanks so much for telling all the Stylish Eyes out there about Catwalk for a Cure and the event on the 13th…I cannot WAIT! I am spreading the word to all of my fashionable friends who are looking for a stylish night out for an amazing cause. Breast cancer has personally touched my life through too many family members and friends and I am thrilled to support such a great organization and a fantastic night out in the city. Great work, Bryan and team!
PS: Stay tuned…I’ll be interviewing some designers and breast cancer survivors over the next few weeks as part of my Catwalking for a Cure blog post series. Thanks for tuning in and hope to see you on the 13th!
I talked about leopard print as one of my 2010 Fall Fab Five. This purrfect print also made it into my 2009 Fall Fab Five, so I ask you..
What have you done to incorporate some leopard into your wardrobe this season?
via Globe Magazine
I saw the Purrfection article in Sunday’s Globe Magazine and thought to myself: “Why is this new news?” I’ve been talking about animal prints – most specifically leopard – for a good 2 years now. The amazing thing about leopard is that it seems to weather the fashion-trend storm. Never really going out of style. Sure, the lines or the fabric or the details may change slightly but not enough to make last winter’s leopard beauty obsolete this winter. The Globe article made a great point about the benefit of leopard for all skin tones – that is something hard to find with a print. Leopard flatters just about every skin tone and I’ve seen all shades from the bold “looks-just-like-a-leopard” print, to more subtle or muted tones, which give you lots of choices to find one that looks great on you.
I’ve heard some of you say that leopard is “too much”. To that I say…try it before your judge. I have a leopard scarf and every time I wear it I feel stylish and like a wildcat (okay, maybe that is a bit of an exaggeration:). Leopard can go bold – like a coat or some hot stiletto boots, or be more of an accessory – like a great clutch or a drapey scarf.
In my closet, I have the following leopard goodies:
1. J. Crew cardigan – about 10 years old. Still wear it and it’s gorgeous.
2. Tory Burch flats – my first pair of TB flats. They are a staple in my wardrobe and, three years later, still look like a million bucks with everything.
3. Ella Moss halter top – Hot leopard print bandeau top with halter strap. Cute with jeans, pencil skirt, vinyl pants…
4. Pashmina – $25 purchase in Soho. Dresses up any fall/winter/spring coat.
5. Cuff – Needs a new clasp but the leopard print cuff I bought last year is still rockin this year.
I don’t know why, but there is something exhilarating about leopard. It’s luxurious and unique and can make anything ordinary look saucy and purrfect. So, I ask you, my style maven, how will you incorporate leopard into your wardrobe this season?
It’s that time again, my stylish darlings. The leaves are turning, the temperature is dropping here in the East and fall fashion is on the menu. I went back and looked at my Fab Five from last Fall:
1. Leopard-print anything
2. Ankle booties
3. Colorful, textured scarves
4. Skinny jeans
5. Long, layered necklaces
What’s interesting is that everything from last Fall is in this Fall – some stuff has evolved a bit into new fashion trends. Here’s a few simple ways to update what you bought last Fall with my Fab Five.
1. Lace
MM Couture by Miss Me Lace Top in Black $70.00
I’m not talking about your grandmother’s lace doilies. I’m talking feminine but sexy lace. I’ve seen it in everything from trim on a skirt to a layered blouse to hosiery. When buying lace, fit is really important because there’s typically no give, unless it’s a blend with spandex or another stretchy material. Lace skirts are beautiful for the holidays and parties when paired with a simple white blouse or sexied up with a tank or camisole. Lace blouses are all the rage. I eyed this gorgeous black lace top on Revolve Clothing. Very rocker chick. Wolford’s has done it again with a lacey racey addition to their Fall line. Must have. Lace takes what’s usually reserved for under your clothes or behind closed doors and brings it to the center of your wardrobe. Take caution as lace on lace is too much and the lace piece of your outfit should be the standout – everything else should be minimal and streamlined. I love this trend and encourage you to add a little lace to spice up your Fall wardrobe.
2. Over-the-knee boots
Over-the-knee boots came on the scene last Fall but didn’t make my list. Why? Well, unfortunately, they missed the list. It was really more about the ankle bootie until Nov/Dec and the over-the-knees started appearing on models in fashion mags. I bought a pair last year and will tell you that I got quite the looks when I wore them. Here’s the deal with this trend. You’ve gotta get it right.
Cole Haan Air Zelo Boot $328 @ Zappos
The good news is now more people are wearing them so you probably will not get the scorn I received last Fall. The thing you’ve gotta get right is the height which requires trying on alot of this style boot to figure out what’s going to fit the best. What you want to achieve is the boot hitting right above your kneecap – we’re not talking hooker boots here people – and you want them to be fitted not slouchy or you’ll be tugging at them all day. The shaft of the boot is always tricky and my clients often complain that boots aren’t made for girls with larger calves. It’s true that most boot shafts are slimmer in style but I have found that certain brands like Aerosole make a wide-width calf. They have a handy double zip on some of their boots that can be extended for a larger calf or zipped up for a slimmer calf. The other decision with over-the-knee boots is heel height. I am a fan of the flat heel – very versatile with jeans and great for lots of walking. The flat heel can also dress up a dress or skirt. If you decide high heel is the way to go, keep in mind my caution about shaft height and don’t go too far over your knee, unless there’s a pole near-by:) I love these Cole Haan boots. Definitely an investment but the leather is goreous and they are versatile in that you can wear them over-the-knee or cuffed and under-the-knee. Two boots for one price. Always thinking, my stylistas. And investing in a top quality leather boot is an investment that pays off for years.
3. Jeggings
In August, I wrote WTF Are Jeggings and Why Do I Care? Well, jeggings are huge for Fall. I recently helped convince a friend to try them out. She thought she could never wear them and that they would never look good. She bought a pair from Lucky.com and tried them on for me. They were super flattering and she loved the stretch and comfort. One word of advice is to order one size down. I know, they will look like they are made for little kids but I promise they stretch and no one wants a baggy jean (saggy = bad). Jeggings I love are from Citizens, Hudson and J Brand. They are also great with this seasons tall boots as you get no jean hang-over (like a muffin-top around your knee-cap = bad).
4. Hats
If you know me, you know I love hats. I always have and look forward to the rain and winter so I can break them out. Hats are huge this Fall.
Betmar Fedora $54
Everythingfrom the Justin Timberlake style Fedora to the page-boy cap or raspberry beret (sorry I had to). I know most of you are thinking – I look terrible in a hat. Really? When’s the last time you tried one on? I bought a really hip tweed hat at a local boutique here in the North End called Bobbles & Lace (they have other locations on the North Shore). $25 and every time I wear it I get compliments and feel like I walked into a 1950′s movie. Betmar is one of my fave hat brands. Very stylish and not too pricy. Love this red beauty for just $54. Try out a fun hat and see how it makes you feel.
5. Faux leather & fur
No Fall wardrobe is complete without a little faux. I’m excited that faux is big this season for a few reasons. First off, designers have been trying to perfect the faux look for a few seasons now and are finally getting it right.
Vena Cava for Aqua Faux Fur Vest @ Bloomies $188
I bought a faux leather jackets a few years ago and it looked more like pleather than leather. Designers are working to get better materials that more closely resemble leather or fur and are paying better attention to the details to make the coats and vests look more realistic. Second, faux is the way to go especially when it comes to a trendy accessory like a fur vest or a leather blazer. Might not live to see another season so why spend $300+ for it to hit the consignment shop next season? And last, but certainly not least, it’s friendly. Lots of people don’t like to buy leather coats or real fur so the faux route gives you the stylish look without the sad face. Ideeli recently had some hip faux leather bomber jackets for under $50. What a steal! A good friend recently bought a faux fur vest and was disappointed last week when it was too warm to sport for a local fashion event (bummer, Chris!). I spotted this faux fur beauty at Bloomies. A little pricy for a trendy piece but it looks very real.
So, my stylish friends, I ask you…what’s on your Fab Five for Fall? Would love to hear what you think about my picks and what you think you’ll add to your wardrobe this Fall. Go forth and be stylish.
A dear friend recently Tweeted…
WTF are jeggings? #clueless
Dear Clueless, have no fear, your answer is here.
Take one part jeans. Add one part leggings. A dash of spandex. Maybe even some polyester or lycra. And, voila, you have yourself a jegging.
Jeggings really hit the style scene last Fall as models started parading them around paired with sky-high stilettos or knee-high riding boots. Though model I am not, I bought one pair last Fall at my fave local jean store in the North End, Injeanius, and was hooked.
What’s so great about jeggings?
1. They are the most comfortable pair of jeans you will ever own that actually look GOOD and are comfortable – something not typically attained in the fashion department.
2. They are NOT, I repeat not, leggings. Please dear fashionista, promise me you will never ever wear leggings as pants outside of your house. Promise? Phew, we got that over with. Jeggings have all the stylings of jeans – stitching, grommets, hems – but all the stretch and comfort of a legging.
3. They fit like a glove. Jeggings create a slimming effect, which is contrary to popular belief. I’ve heard people say they fear looking like a stuffed sausage. I say, try them and see for yourself. Just like a regular jean, you might need to try a few different brands to find the perfect fit.
4. They are generally cheaper than a pair of True Religions. Most jeggings I’ve seen run under $100. Rue La La just had James Jeans jeggings for under $70 – a steal!
5. They honestly go with everything. A tank and flats. A hot night-on-the-town top and stilettos. A jacket and boots. The slim style is especially great with boots – no pant overhang. I hate it when that happens.
So, I urge to to test-drive the jeggings style jeans for Fall and see what happens. Be careful you might become addicted like me.
PS: Have you tried jeggings? Would love to hear if you are in love, like, hate…tell me all about it.
This week’s pick of the week brought to you by my new favorite shoe site, EndlessShoes.com. I love this online shoe store because 1) free overnight shipping on new styles (i.e. get it wicked fast), 2) they have awesome styles and selection (i.e. look wicked good) and 3) their brands are a step-above Zappos (i.e. no offense zappos but a girl needs variety).
The city girl’s dilemma is always looking hip and stylish while walking the cobblestone-studded streets riddled with subway heat vents, gutters and sinkholes. Wearing your gorgeous stilettos in this urban footwear minefield can often result in the oh so famous twisted ankle or better yet, the broken-off heel of a well-made shoe. What’s a girl to do? Well, crocs (gasp) are certainly not an option and sneakers are so 1992 and flip flops, which I love, can get old after a while. So, I’ve been on a hunt for a stylish pair of flat sandals to walk to and from work and where ever else I need to walk in the city. They are the “walk to work and then change in to your fancy shoes” shoes.
Alas, I have found them.
The brand is Ziginy and these sandals have the delicious balance of, dare I say, comfort and style. Every style has it’s own bling. Studs, chains, rhinestones, beads. It’s all in there. You decide how much. Now, you need to know that I do not buy shoes for comfort. If a pair happen to be comfortable, it’s like getting an extra scoop of icecream for free or finding a $20 bill in your pocket. It’s lucky. (I know, there’s probably a support group for that too.)
Well, regardless of whether you’re looking for a stylish sandal to parade around town or a comfy sandal to chase after the kids, the Ziginy brand delivers on both. FTW!
Okay, I admit it. I have a thing for these sample sites. They lure me with their great deals and saucy heels and, a while back, I fell prey to too much sample sale shopping. They need a support group for that. But alas, I am now a much pickier shopper. I look for great brands AND great bargains. I often wait a bit to make sure I really love it. And, dear fashionista, be sure to read the fine print about returns (often no returns on accessories and merch credit for clothing.)
In any case, fast forward to today. I was on Ideeli and spotted this crazy adorable black clutch by Ava Rose Handbags. I said to this supple leather beauty, you must be mine. You might be wondering why I bought it. Well, something you may not know about me is that everything I buy has “criteria”. Yeah, I mean a list of reasons why I should buy it. Why? It’s the only way to make sure it will make an impact on my wardrobe enough for me to buy it. Here’s how my stylish brain works. So, I see this bag. I look it over – alot. Zooming in and out, reading and estimating dimensions, googling the manufacturer. Then I said to myself, here’s why I think this bag is a good purchase:
1. It’s unique. You won’t see many gal pals strutting around town with this beauty.
2. It’s a great size. I can fit my iPhone, pocket mirror, lipgloss, keys, gum, camera and probably even a light sweater in this clutch.
Ava Rose "Bianca" Clutch $62 @ Ideeli
3. The colors are neutral but not. It’s black but the metallic and red piping is sure to go with just about everything in my closet. So it’s a neutral bag but has really interesting accents that kick it up a notch.
4. It’s a bargain. Retail price: $198. Ideeli price: $62. I will take a 60% discount on a gorgeous leather bag that I will use all the time, any time.
5. It’s rocker chick. It is called the “Bianca” and maybe that’s why it reminds me of an underground British club and a rocker chick in leather pants and teased out hair. I like to let my inner rocker chick out every once and a while and this is a great, well-priced way to do it.
In addition to this beauty, there are 2 other styles, which I also loved. These are going to go fast, so go to Ideeli now using my fancy link (so I get some referral juice) and get yourself a stylish clutch. Do you have criteria when you shop? I’d love to hear about how you make your purchases. Do share!
Want to spice up your summer wardrobe? Looking for something to do tonight? How about some Proseco, apps, style and jewels – oh, and a bunch of stylish ladies? I am proud to host the North End’s first Stella & Dot style party. Haven’t heard about this fabulous line of jewelry? Well, take a look. My good friends, Jesse Pezzullo and Jennifer Tobasky, are the Stella & Dot stylists coming to share the goods at tonight’s style party. The line boasts everything from fun multi-strand beaded necklaces to beautiful enamel cuff bracelets.
If you know me, you know I luv accessories. I have more accessories than I know what to do with. Some call it an addiction, I call it a cost-efficient way to transform an outfit or a wardrobe. The challenge with some pieces or lines of jewelry is that they can often make a statement but are a “one-outfit” type of accessory. I have some of those and rarely wear them. What I love about the S&D line is that each piece makes a statement but is versatile at the same time. For example, think of the endless ways to wear this Bocca Necklace.
Bocca Bee Necklace
Maybe a white tee-shirt with jeans. Or a strapless turquoise or yellow top with a skirt or white jeans. Or a silk or crisp cotton blouse with a pencil skirt. Or go sexy with a black tube top and skinny jeans and a great stiletto or wedge sandal – yowzah, mamasita. Another big trend right now is the cuff bracelet. You see them everywhere and all the celebs are wearing them. The biggah the bettah. Embellished, enamel, multicolored, stacked, anything goes. I love this S&D cuff. Think of it paired for every day with shorts and a tank, a sundress or capri jeans and a tee. Or for night with a fun top and jeans or even a party dress. Versatility and style – a girl’s best friends.
Kelly Cuff Bracelet
So, here’s to a fun, stylish and versatile dose of summer style. The party starts at 7:30 at my house. I’d love to have you stop by. You can reach me directly at michelle(at)thestylisheye.com and I can give you the details. Oh, and if you can’t come but see something you love, I can hook you up with that too. Here’s to a fun night with Stella & Dot!
Only in Tokyo, could pots, pans, knives and spatulas make it onto the runway. Japan, widely known for it’s fashion eccentricity and trendsetting, is the perfect place to showcase a new fashion trend. Kitchenware. Well, actually, it’s more of a branding and PR stunt than a trend (I hope). The company who produced the kitchenware couture is Fissler, a German cookware manufacturer. They decided to take their stainless steel goodies to their growing market in Asia through a creative kitchenware-inspired runway show. The fashions are not so much “ready to wear” but certainly give new meaning to the phrase “buns of steel.” (Sorry, I couldn’t resist.) I applaud their unique approach to engaging with their market and love the creativity that went into designing each piece. Enjoy!
I thought long and hard about this title. I tried titles that were a bit simpler like: Rubber shoes FTL or Rubber shoes, who would wear ‘em? I even tried a title that would fit on one line. But then I wrote down what I really feel and this, my friends, is how I feel every time I see some middle-aged white guy strolling through the North End in multi-colored rubber shoes. There is a reason for the Facebook group: I don’t care how comfortable Crocs are, you look like a dumbass. You do.
Okay, so then the folks at Crocs come out with their new Spring/Summer line of shoes. I will say that as a marketer, it is brilliant. Someone at Crocs WHQ probably said, let’s expand our market and go after the people who won’t wear the rubber shoes because they look ridiculous. Yeah, you know the other zillion Americans that will wear rubber shoes that kinda look like shoes? Yeah, yeah. Let’s make the ugly rubber shoes look more like real shoes! Maybe it will double our revenue?! Wicked smart.
The problem is they are a) still rubber and b) still ugly.
Then, one of my fave sample sale sites, Ideeli, had a sale today for Melissa Shoes. The brand is new to me and, I will say, they give the Crocs new line a run for it’s money. While the Melissa shoes are still rubber and still ugly, they at least try to look more like something a somewhat stylish person would choose to wear. The Crocs people talk about “fusing comfort and style seamlessly” and “wearable hugs.” I know not of either of these nirvanas and know that, if they did exist, they certainly would not come in rubber.
Christopher Muther at the Boston Globe recently wrote a very funny post about how he became a Crocs “convert”, well sort of. I appreciate his candid quote where he says, “…but I’m not ready to part with my “Friends don’t let friends wear Crocs’’ T-shirt quite yet.” Well said, Mr. Muther.
I keep coming back around to a few main issues. First, rubber shoes make your feet sweat. There’s no way for those things to breathe – I don’t care if they have holes in the top and are made of super-special rubber technology, feet sweat, especially when it’s 90 degress out and feet encased in sweaty rubber is just gross. Second, they look like you chose comfort over style. There, I said it. Everyone I talk to about this subject says, “They are so comfortable!” Not one person EVER says: “They look so great!” And, lastly, well, I hate to say it, but it makes you look like you couldn’t spend the time to go to a normal shoe store, try on some normal shoes and actually make an effort to make footwear a part of your wardrobe. For this last unfortunate issue…I quietly shed a tear.
So, my rubber shoe wearing friend, what say you as to why I should embrace the rubber shoe bonanza and make it part of my wardrobe? I anxiously await your rebuttal. For those of you who agree with me, I welcome your non-rubber support.
PS: I think this is the most times I’ve written down the word “rubber”. Ever. It is a weird word. Okay, that is all. Talk amongst yourselves.
